Working & Skilled Visas

Navigating the 'Core Skills' Pathway

The Australian skilled visa system has shifted towards the Core Skills Occupations List. Whether you are a trade professional like a Carpenter or a high-tech specialist, we ensure your application meets the 2026 salary and skills assessment standards (TSMIT and OSAP).

Other Skilled, Innovation and Working Holiday Visa options that Migrate2Australia may help you consider include:

Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189)

The Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189) is a permanent visa pathway for invited skilled workers who have qualifications and experience in an eligible occupation.

Applicants in the points-tested stream must submit an Expression of Interest through SkillSelect and receive an invitation before they can apply for the visa.

This visa does not require sponsorship by an employer, State or Territory government, or eligible family member. It allows successful applicants to live, work and study anywhere in Australia permanently.

National Innovation Visa (Subclass 858)

The National Innovation Visa (Subclass 858) is a permanent visa pathway for people with an internationally recognised record of exceptional and outstanding achievement in an eligible field.

It is designed for high-calibre individuals who can make a significant contribution to Australia, including established and emerging leaders in areas such as research, entrepreneurship, innovation, sport and the arts.

Applicants must first submit an Expression of Interest and receive an invitation before lodging a visa application. The National Innovation Visa has replaced the previous Global Talent visa pathway.

Employer Nomination Scheme Visa (Subclass 186)

This visa lets skilled workers, who are nominated by their employer, live and work in Australia.

Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190)

This visa is for workers who have been nominated by an Australian State or Territory government to live as a permanent resident in Australia. The process for a 190 visa is very complex with many regulations and requires professional assistance to ensure you don’t waste time or money on incomplete or ineligible applications.

Training Visa (Subclass 407)

This visa allows you to take part in workplace-based occupational training activities to improve your skills for your job, area of tertiary study, field of expertise or in a professional development training program in Australia.

Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) Visa (Subclass 494)

This visa enables regional employers to address identified labour shortages within their region by sponsoring skilled workers where employers can’t source an appropriately skilled Australian worker.

Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485)

This visa is for eligible international students who have recently graduated from an Australian educational institution. It allows successful applicants to live, study and work in Australia temporarily after completing their studies.

Skills in Demand Visa (Subclass 482)

The Skills in Demand Visa (Subclass 482) is a temporary employer-sponsored visa for suitably skilled workers who are nominated by an approved Australian employer.

The visa includes the Core Skills, Specialist Skills and Labour Agreement streams. It replaced the former Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa framework.

Skilled Regional Visa (Subclass 887)

This visa is for people who have lived and worked in specified areas of regional Australia on a previous, eligible visa.

Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (Subclass 491)

A visa for skilled people nominated by a State or Territory government, or sponsored by an eligible family member, to live and work in regional Australia.

Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417) and Work and Holiday Visa (Subclass 462)

Working Holiday and Work and Holiday visas may allow eligible young adults from participating countries and jurisdictions to travel, work and study in Australia temporarily.

The Working Holiday Visa is Subclass 417, while the Work and Holiday Visa is Subclass 462. Eligibility depends on factors such as your passport country, age, education requirements and available visa places.

Depending on your circumstances, you may be able to apply for a second or third Working Holiday Maker visa after completing eligible specified work in Australia. Different requirements may apply depending on your nationality and visa subclass.

Depending on your visa, you may be able to:

  • Live, work and/or study in Australia for the duration of your visa.
  • Access Medicare if you meet the relevant eligibility requirements.
  • Include eligible family members in your application or sponsor eligible relatives, where permitted.
  • Travel to and from Australia while your visa remains valid.
  • If granted permanent residence and eligible, apply for Australian citizenship.
