Direction 121 applies to Skills in Demand subclass 482 applications, including the former Temporary Skill Shortage subclass 482 applications identified on the Department’s page. The Temporary Skill Shortage visa was replaced by the Skills in Demand visa on 7 December 2024.

The processing order is:

1. Applications connected with Construction, Healthcare, Teaching, Agriculture, Aquaculture, Fishing or Resources, or Australia’s law enforcement and defence interests.
2. Specialist Skills stream applications.
3. Applicants who were in Australia when they lodged.
4. Primary applicants outside Australia at lodgement whose application has not been combined with another person’s application.
5. All other applications.

Migrate2Australia stresses that a sector label alone is not enough. The exact occupation, nomination and supporting evidence must be checked.

For an Australian Skilled Visa or Skilled visa to Australia, this means that an application may be allocated for processing differently from another application. It does not change the applicable occupation list, points test, skills assessment, English requirement, nomination requirement or decision-making power of the Department.

The Directions apply to applications lodged on or after 19 September 2026 and earlier applications that remain undecided. The Department may depart from the order in limited circumstances involving community safety, essential services or international relations. Migrate2Australia expects some short-term disruption while pending cases are reviewed and allocation systems are updated.

Direction 114 remains relevant to certain closed Business Innovation and Investment applications. Direction 120, effective from 25 July 2026, covers Class BX subclass 858 applications, including National Innovation visa applications and certain predecessor categories. This is a separate pathway from the Skilled visa to Australia program.

The official SkillSelect page states that the next Skilled Independent subclass 189 invitation round is expected by 30 September 2026. “Expected by” is not a guaranteed date. The general minimum points threshold is 65, but points alone do not guarantee an invitation. Ranking, occupation demand, occupation ceilings and available places remain relevant.

Applicants should update their Expression of Interest, verify every points claim, confirm that their skills assessment remains valid and check English test validity. An invited applicant generally has 60 days to lodge the visa application.

Direction 122 does not create a subclass 189 invitation and does not increase points. Migrate2Australia recommends separating invitation settings, state nomination, visa eligibility and processing priority.

No Partner visa Australia setting was announced as changed between 17 and 20 September 2026. Direction 117 remains relevant and generally gives the highest family processing priority to onshore partner applications that can be granted onshore.

Direction 117 does not replace relationship, identity, sponsorship, health or character requirements. The charge for most applicants is reported as starting from AUD 11,710 from 1 July 2026. Confirm the current amount through the official Visa Pricing Estimator before payment.

Processing times published by the Department are indicative only, are not guaranteed and can change. If a visitor visa has an individually imposed No Further Stay condition, such as condition 8503 or a relevant instrument, it may affect an onshore strategy. Australian Citizenship Day was observed on 17 September 2026. No new citizenship setting has been identified in the 17–20 September updates. The citizenship test remains multiple-choice, requires 75 per cent overall and requires correct answers to all five mandatory Australian values questions. The ceremony remains the final compulsory step for conferral applicants to make the pledge.

Applicants should monitor the official citizenship pages and Department correspondence, particularly where councils experience ceremony scheduling delays.

Other announced reforms—including possible points-test changes, family-member restrictions for many new student and graduate visa applicants, future No Further Stay settings and Working Holiday Maker ballot proposals—must be treated as proposed or announced policy unless and until implemented. They do not automatically change existing visa conditions.
